East Coast Swing

Following a request, we are super excited to announce our first series of Swing Dancing classes!

Kim Hargrove, from Happy Valley Dance (Yup, Happy Valley Dance is coming to the Center for Happiness – pretty cool, huh?) is going to lead us through our first 4-weeks series.

For this series, we will practice the East Coast Swing and from what I understand, Kim has a lot more for us to play with, later on (think Cha Cha, Waltz, West Coast Swing, Night Club Two Step, The Hustle and more…)

Kim tells me:

“When folks talk about swing dancing to the music of Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry back in the 50′s, this is the dance they were doing. Also called The Jitterbug, East Coast Swing is the official “sock hop” swing dance for jump blues. East Coast Swing is a circular, rotating swing dance that has many turns. The basic step we’ll do is “Slow, slow, rock step.” The music is diverse and includes oldies from the 40’s and 50’s, jump blues, and country. East Coast Swing is a versatile dance suitable for both the ballroom and the bar room. Since this is a quick dance, the steps should be small and light.  It’s like learning to jump rope: initially it’s awkward, but eventually it becomes smooth and nearly effortless.”

Sounds good to me!

We need a minimum of 15 people to make this happen  – and I think that within two hours of  just letting a few people know about this, we were half way there – so please register as soon as you are able so I may tell Kim that YES, we are on!

Note: while bringing a partner (or experience) is not necessary, we would love to have some men among us.

And once we have a few series under our belt, we’ll have a big old dance party!
